Jo Kown (left) and Ga-in from "We Got Married" [MBC] |
MBC " We Got Married" - Saturday 5:10 p.m.
Looking back, ¡°We Got Married¡± had never shown us anything close to a real marriage, except in the early stage of Kim Yong-joon and Hwang Jeong-eum's relationship who were an actual couple. The basic concept of the program -- showing the reality of married life through the virtual marriage of TV stars -- was unique but after the refreshing image of early star couples wore off, most of the episodes started to fill up with cliche romantic events and make-believe dates which became the source to increased delusion of married life.
But it was 'Adam Couple,' referring to the couple composed of idol singers Jo Kwon from boy band 2AM and Son Ga-in from girl group Brown Eyed Girls, that broke through the show's deceptive shell. The two who began their make-believe marriage in a container, refused to get inundated with various marriage-related missions and instead focused on spending time for themselves. They probably grew and matured, like Jo Kwon confessed in the last episode in how he discovered "unknown sides" to him, during the time they acted as their actual selves who are genuinely interested in each other, instead of pretending to play husband and wife. But just like it has ended for previous couples on this variety show, the imaginary married life for Jo Kwon and Ga-in came to an abrupt halt without much of a notice in advance nor time to prepare. 'Adam Couple' spent their final hours together quietly, without putting together a special event despite having been 'husband' and 'wife' for a whole 15 months. So their separation that ended with a casual ¡°See you around¡± may have been so likely of them but it was also true that the careless editing by the crew and made their last moment look forlorn and insignificant. In fact, the way the young couple turned stiff and awkward after their time to love was over, almost seemed to resemble the end to actual relationships, whether it be romantic or pure friendship. Jo Kwon¡¯s ending words ¡°..and so Adam Couple lived happily ever after,¡± -- just like fairy tales that bury the stories what comes after the marriage -- became a declaration that symbolized the end of another era for ¡°We Got Married.¡± What remains now in ¡°Married¡± are two idol couples who have been going around exaggerating only the sweet parts of married life while ignoring the pain and difficulties actual couples experience. Will they be able to open a new era for ¡°Married¡± where not even a trace of real marriage can be detected?
