Korean short animation "A Purpleman" has collected two awards at international film festivals in Japan and Canada, according to the respective websites on Thursday.

According to the website of the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2011, "A Purpleman," a co-production by directors Kim Tak-hoon, Ryu Jin-ho, Yoo Jin-young and Park Sung-ho, scored the grand prize under the Asia International & Japan category against nine other short films at the fest held in Tokyo from June 16 to 26.

"A Purpleman" also took home the award for best documentary at the 11th annual Nickel Independent Film Festival held in Canada from June 21 to 25.

"A Purpleman," which took two years to produce and nine months to shoot, tells the story of a North Korean teenager named Hyuk who is released from prison and succeeds in escaping to South Korea.

He is happy to be living in South Korea but disheartened about being neither a red man (symbol of North Korea) nor a blue man (symbol of South Korea) and considers himself to be purple.
