The special experience and pride of Dvorak Hall

2011년 드보르작 홀에서의 신년 음악회 공연장면. 이날 필자는 샤를 구노(Charles Gounod 1818~1893)의 로미오와 줄리엣 중 ‘나는 살고 싶어요’를 열창해 관객으로부터 뜨거운 기립박수를 받았다.

체코(Czech) 프라하(Praha)에 있는 드보르작 홀(Dvorak hall)은 아담한 건물로 참 예쁘다. 무대도 팔을 벌리면 감싸는 듯 구성되어 있고 객석도 나무 재질 의자로 관객들은 살짝 몸을 흔들면서 편하게 관람할 수 있도록 배려해 무대에 서면 관중과 함께 호흡하는 듯해서 자연스럽게 노래에 몰입하게 되는 기쁨이 있다.

Dvorak Hall, which is located in Praha, Czech Republic, is a small and beautiful building. The stage is made to appear as if it is opening its arms to embrace something, and the seats are made of wood and rock slightly for the comfort of the audience. Thus, when the performance is played on stage, it feels as if they are breathing together with the audience, and therefore, brings about a joy of being naturally immersed into the song.

뿐만 아니라 노래와 악기연주 음(音)이 관객들에게 부드럽게 퍼져갔다가 다시 되돌아오는 느낌으로 감정 표현이 상승되어 오케스트라와 관객과 솔리스트(soliste)인 필자와 완벽하게 하나가 되는 경험을 하곤 했다.

In addition, expression of emotions are enhanced by a feeling that the notes from the song and instruments spread softly to the audience, and then returns. Through this, it was possible to experience the orchestra, audience and myself, who was the soliste, become completely one.

공연이 끝난 후 관객들의 기립박수도 오랫동안 아름다운 기억으로 남을 것이다. 무엇보다 한국인으로서 유럽의 비중 있는 극장에서 새해 첫 인사를 한다는 것은 음악인으로서 영광이자 아주 특별한 경험과 자긍심이기도 하였다.

The long standing ovation after the performance will also be remembered for a long time as a beautiful memory. Above all else, starting the New Year off at a prominent theatre of Europe as a Korean and a musician, is an honor, a special experience, and a thing to be proud of.

이 때문에 드보르작 홀에서 공연은 늘 설렘임을 준다. 2011년 새해에도 필자는 이 홀에서 공연을 했다. 무대에 오르는 순간 한국의 아름다운 전통 의상을 보고 객석에서 ‘와우’, ‘원더풀’하는 탄성이 쏟아졌다.

That is why performing Dvorak Hall is always exciting. I performed at this Hall on New Years in 2011 as well. The audience made cries of excitement such as 'wow' and 'wonderful' when looking at the beautiful traditional clothes of Korea when I went on stage.
