The contest at Korea's best traditional restaurant Arirang was fancy but ended with unexpected tragedies. Baek Sul-hee (Kim Bo-yeon) who lost despite using trickery from being overcome with a sense of inferiority, also lost her son and Sung Do-hee (Jun In-hwa) gained the title of commander but had to divorce due to her husband's affair with another woman. Then the incidents that followed, including self-injury, suicide, disappearance and memory loss that led to changing the fates of the children, were all driven into the first episode of "Supper of the Gods" (tentative title) as well, turning the show into a so-called 'trashy' drama which it would have qualified for with just two of all the aforementioned elements. The second episode was not much different either. Twelve years later, Sul-hee returned with the problem from the past competition and approached the day that the two children, whose fates were changed, would meet. And in the meantime, the show did not forget to implant viewers with the image that one child is born with a perfect sense of taste while the other tried hard to make a certain fate her own out of spite and effort.
That is why "Supper" could be called a weekend drama where the stories revolving around stimulating topics are told at maximum speed. The competition, evident from the first scene of the show, carried throughout the family and the personalities and capabilities of the two women, faced with the twist of fate, were typical. But "Supper" told its story without concern for the likeliness of its occurrences nor giving viewers time to think about why its characters acted in the way they did. The cards expected to be kept away till later were used one after another and time passed by quickly. Nowadays, it has become natural to add in these so-called 'trashy' elements to dramas and the question at hand has become how much these ingredients spice up the show. A dish cooked up in such a way may satisfy your taste buds momentarily but cannot be good for your health. In the same way, if stimulating stories and speedy development is all that there is to "Supper," it does not look like it will have an easy time becoming a good show.
