Interview with boy band B1A4 CNU, Jinyoung, Gongchan
My name is CNU. My real name is Shin Dong-woo.
I was born on June 16, 1991. I have a sister who is five years older than me.
I was kind of surprised when I first heard our song "Baby I'm Sorry." I've watched Jinyoung composing songs even before making our debut, but it was the first time that I was surprised to notice that he put in a lot of effort in this song. The tune has a completely different feeling compared to his other songs. I think that he was able to come up with it because as a member of B1A4, he knows what kind of music go well with our concept.
While "O.K" and "Beautiful Target" give off the feeling of confessing one's love, "Baby I'm Sorry" is a song about breaking up. For this track, it is important to express the meanings in the lyrics through our facial expressions, so we practiced with a camera to monitor ourselves.
It's kind of difficult to pinpoint which member 'isn't' the best dancer. I think it's because we work really hard in order to make up for what we lack. Well, if I really have to pick someone (looks at Sandeul)... (laugh)
I went through some emotional distress when I tied my hair with a rubber band. I used a lot of bobby pins in order to keep my hair in place since our dance moves were quite active. So I had to take out the pins one by one before taking showers. I'm more comfortable now since it's not as bad as it was before.
I was in a band called, 'Gepgoal' (in Romanized Korean) when I was in high school. It was the nickname a member from the band and we couldn't think of any other names at the time. Back then, we all thought that our name had a strong impact (laugh). We tried coming up with a meaning for the name but later came to a conclusion that we should just tell people that it does not have any meanings. Honestly, I joined the band because I enjoyed music, and no other reason. Back then, I was full of rock spirit.
However, I didn't think that I should devote myself in playing in a rock band. All my interest was in music and dancing so I decided that I should become a singer.
I once tried to prank Sandeul and Gongchan with a hidden camera. Baro and I first tricked them by arguing with a lot of swears and a director from our agency pretended like he was punishing us. That was when Sandeul came in and he was like "What's going on here?" and he knelt down next to us. The director continued to act angry and told us to re-enact our fight scene and Baro and I were saying things like, "Hey, you squirrel," "You look like a bear," "You are stupid" and "You're more stupid." We just kept talking nonsense. It was so funny to see Sandeul falling for it (laugh). But of course, Gongchan, who is quick witted, didn't get fooled by our joke.
Baro gently closes his eyes shut whenever something big happens. It's really cute to see him quietly taking in deep breaths and shaking.
Our agency promised that we can move into a new dorm when we grab our first win on a music program. I think it will be great because there will be more bathrooms. Right now, we only have one bathroom and it takes a long time to wash up. I think if we had one more bathroom, someone can sleep there. (laugh)
My name is Jinyoung and my full name is Jung Jinyoung.
I was born on November 18, 1991. My sister is two years older than me.
I was cast to join the group while I was taking acting lessons and preparing to enter college. An official from my current agency called me to audition after they saw my picture online. I really liked how the company gave off a warm and trustful image (laugh). I showed the staffs a piece that I prepared for my college entrance exam and sang singer Lee Juck's song "It's Fortunate."
When I dyed my hair red with a spray, I remember that everytime I washed my hair it turned the water in bloody red. I had that water cover my face whenever I sweat during rehearsals or pre-recordings. I thought it was kind of sad because the color was really pretty. (Baro: I was really shocked when we shot scenes at a swimming pool. I thought that I was bleeding from my body when I was taking a shower next to him...)
I never thought that the song "Baby I'm Sorry," which I wrote myself, would be chosen as our title track. I just told the members that it's a song that I just made and their response was great. And that's how it became our title track.
It takes time for me when I'm directing someone for recording tracks. (Sandeul: You can't get out from the studio once you go in there. / Baro: Really? I came out right away.) I could just let things pass but in order to improve the songs' quality, I wanted to record it by going over track by track. Overall, everyone recorded their parts relatively fast, but for Sandeul...(laugh). I feel that it took him a bit longer because his parts are more difficult than others'. And he did a great job in catching up.
I used to made snacks for other members late at night like Aglio e Olio and kimchi stew. There were several times when I tried new menus to test on the members and they all turned out great.
I am a veteran actor when it comes to acting sick. There was this one time when CNU was playing pranks on the members with a hidden camera and I naturally acted like I was fainting, shouting that I have a chest pain. I literally begged Baro to hurry and grab me some medicine. "CNU! You remember that medicine that I always take. Chocolate milk!" It's all about method acting. (laugh) We play a lot of pranks on each other, especially with hidden cameras. So we have to be careful every time when we return from a bathroom. We always plot something when one person leaves the room.
We decided to try doing 'human hamburger' (piling on top of one another) when we win on a music show. We will play a game to choose who will be on the bottom of the human hamburger.
Sandeul is able to go into extremely hot water in saunas, as if it's nothing. I suffered several times by going in after him, thinking that the temperature was bearable. I even tried to test him by turning on the hot water all the way up and he said that it was fine. (Sandeul: Honestly, it is impossible to make me feel a hot temperature with the water from our dorm.)
My name is Gongchan. My real name is Gong Chan-shik.
I was born on August 14, 1993. I have a younger brother who is in the eighth grade. He's not used to seeing me on television. I think it's because I was pretty harsh on him at home as the oldest child in the family, while I act cute on TV...(laugh) Even my friends wonder if I'm the same person with Gongchan they see on TV. I'm pretty quiet at school.
I tried hugging someone from the back for the first time while shooting the music video to "Baby I'm Sorry." I remember telling myself that the actress standing in front of me was my real girlfriend and tried to focus (laugh). (Baro: We were all in awe because he did such a great job. Things like that usually come out because of previous experiences...)
I've always dreamt of becoming a singer but I didn't have many opportunities to go for auditions, because I lived in the countryside. One day I received a call from our agency to come in for an audition after they saw my picture online. The picture was...I took it by myself (laugh). I was not the hottest guy in our neighborhood or anything.
I've never thought that I was handsome. I just thought that my friends were joking whenever they said that I'm good looking. I went to a co-ed school and there weren't that many girls that had a crush on me. (CNU: I thought that I saw a light when I first saw Gongchan standing at a crosswalk. Really, I'm not joking.)
I usually don't lose when I play rock, paper and scissor with the older members. I know their patterns. CNU goes by his patterns when playing the game, but sometimes I lose by making mistakes. Sandeul's pattern is the easiest. He mostly goes with scissors. Whenever we play the Mafia game, it's quite easy to guess that he is chosen as the 'spy' but he keeps saying that he's not. It's just too funny. So at times we just go with what he says. (Sandeul: Wow...so you've been playing me the whole time?)
Sandeul does not know any soccer players. I remember this one time when we were playing a soccer game and he kept saying that Roneldo is the best. What he meant to say was Ronaldo (laugh). (Sandeul: No wonder why no one knew what I was talking about.)
I fall into meditation whenever I go on scary rides at amusement parks. I just close my eyes during the whole ride...right when it shoots down and the wind surrounds my body, it feels like my heart is still way up there. It is as if my heart falls after my body does...it's really scary.
I wanted to get my license after I saw CNU driving. Once, I followed CNU to a store to buy chips before hanging out in his house. I sat in the passenger seat and he was driving. He looked so cool. It felt like, 'Wow! He has a car' (laugh). He even backed the car just like how people do it on TV. I'm going to get my license too this year because I'm an adult now. If you're a man, you gotta get the 'type 1' license. (Jinyoung: I have the 'type 2' license. I'm not embarrassed at all.)
