산 이야기, 90.9×72.7㎝ Oil on Canvas, 2008

그는 산을 온갖 생명체를 끌어안는 무한한 포용력과 장중한 자태 그리고 그 남성적인 힘의 상징으로 받아들이고 있다. 무엇보다도 웅혼한 산의 기상과 기백이야말로 생명력, 즉 생동감의 상징적인 면모에 합당하다. 이러한 산의 실체를 조형적으로 구체화하기 위해서는 설명적인 사실묘사는 한계가 있다고 인식했는지 모른다. 다시 말해 시각적인 이미지로서의 강렬한 힘의 표현, 즉 신체적인 힘을 그대로 노출시키는 질감을 통해 생명의 기운, 또는 산의 정기를 내포시킬 수 있다고 판단한 것이리라.

He tries to absorb mountains on his painting as the symbol of the endless catholicity that involves all creatures, the sublime appearance and the masculine power. Above all, it is the spirit and energy of magnificent of mountains that is the symbol of dynamic movement. To illuminate the essence of mountain in creative way, it could be limited to the expository real description. In other words, it can be contained the powerful expression of visual image, the sprite of life by the matiere revealing the physical power as it is, or the energy of mountain.

금강산(만물상), 90.9×72.7㎝ 2012

그의 작업은 처음부터 오늘에 이르기까지 줄곧 두터운 물감으로 일관하고 있다. 거기에다가 스스로 힘에 부칠 만큼 거칠고 강렬한 필치를 구사한다. 단지 물감을 두텁게 바르는 행위의 연속으로 이루어진다. 이는 그의 작업이 가지고 있는 표현의 윤리성이다. 작업하는 그 과정에서는 형태를 거의 의식하지 않는 듯싶다. 그저 두텁게 물감을 찍어 바르는 행위가 반복되는 가운데 최종적으로 검은 윤곽선에 의해 산의 형태가 간신히 드러날 따름이기에 그렇다.

His work from the beginning to the present has been consistently painted in thick colors. And it was expressed in the strong brushwork beyond his capacity. It was achieved in the successive activity applying thick colors to the painting. This can be told about the moral question of expression. In the process of work, the form is out of consideration. The form of mountain was barely revealed by black outlines during repetitive thick brushing of colors.

지리산, 162.2×130.3㎝ 2006

작품에 따라 조금씩 차이는 있을망정, 붓의 터치는 아주 경쾌하게 느껴진다. 형태를 의식하지 않고 단지 물감을 듬뿍 찍어 바르는 단순한 행위의 연속은 자연스럽게 리듬을 촉발한다. 리듬을 타는 터치는 지극히 자연스럽기 마련이다. 그 리듬에는 일테면 몰아의 경지로 몰아가는 자기흥취가 함께하는 것이다. 물감을 찍어 바르는 단순반복 행위는 신체와 감정 그리고 정신의 혼연일체를 조장한다. 이와 같은 표현행위가 가져오는 표현적인 성과는 다름 아닌 생명의 리듬이다. 자연이 품고 있는, 아니 산이 품고 있는 원초적인 생명의 리듬이 바로 그의 캔버스로 옮겨지는 셈이다.

Although it has the difference depends on artworks, the touch of brush approaches in very delightful way. It can be stirred naturally the rhythm in the simple succession of the activity fully brushing colors without recognizing the form. The rhythmical touch is very natural. So to speak, the rhythm was related to the self-interest rising above self. The simple repetitive activity brushing colors can be promoted to unite body, emotion and soul together. The expressive achievement in this way is the rhythm of life. The original rhythm of life belongs to God moves into his canvas.

산 이야기, 80×130㎝ 2010

하지만 그는 표정보다는 역시 생명의 리듬에 무게를 둔다. 붓이 만들어내는 표현을 통해 그 이면에 자리하는 대자연의 생명감, 즉 맥박처럼 힘차게 요동하는 생명의 리듬을 포착하는데 심혈을 기울인다. 물감을 찍어 바르는 그 행위가 여러 차례 반복되면서 캔버스의 두께가 만들어지고 그에 비례하여 심도가 깊어지는 것은 당연한 일이리라. 반복되는 행위를 통해 형성되는 물감의 층은 심연을 모를 산의 깊이를 반영한다. 수 천 년의 세월을 통해 형성되는 지층처럼 생명의 리듬이 겹쳐지면서 그림의 심도 또한 깊어지는 것이다.

설악산, 45.5×53㎝ 2011

눈에 보이는 이미지, 즉 산의 형상이 지극히 간결한데도 감상자의 마음을 끌어당기는 어떤 흡인력은 바로 물감의 층이 만들어내는 깊이감에서 비롯된다. 오일물감이라는 질료가 만들어내는 유채화의 깊이, 그리고 유채화의 맛이란 바로 이런 것임을 웅변하고 있다. 기름진 물감의 존재감은 역시 두터운 질감을 통해 만들어지는 것이다. 더러는 색채를 혼합하지 않고 튜브에서 나오는 순색을 그대로 바름으로써 색채의 순도를 높인다. 고흐의 그림에서 볼 수 있듯이 순도 높은 색채이미지에서는 생명의 반짝임과도 같은 신선함이 느껴지는 것이다. 이러한 표현기법은 발랄하고 경쾌한 원초적인 자연의 생명력, 즉 생동감을 표현하는데 효과적일 수 있다.

It was emphasized the oil painting's depth made by oil colors, and the taste of oil painting. The existence of oily colors can be made by the thick matiere. Sometimes it was enhanced the degree of purity by using a pure color from tubes without mixing colors. As seeing a painting of van Gogh, the color image with a high degree of purity can be approached the fresh vitality of life. This expressing technique can be brought the delightful original spirit of nature, namely, it is the dynamic energy.

백두산Ⅱ, 90.9×72.7㎝ 2008

특히 백두산을 포함하여 설경을 제재로 하는 산 풍경은 그 이미지가 더욱 명료하다. 짙푸른 천지와 흰 눈, 그리고 산 모양을 수식하는 검은 윤곽선으로 요약되는 백두산 설경은 그의 산 그림이 지향해온 조형세계를 일목요연하게 압축해낸다. 전체적으로는 지극히 간결한 풍경이지만, 그로부터 느끼는 감동은 결코 간단치 않다.

In particular, the image of mountain landscapes in the theme of snow scene including Paekdu Mountain is distinctive. It can be summarized his pursuing creative world in obvious way in the snow scene of Paekdu Mountain with deep blue Cheonji and white snow and the black outline revealed the form of mountain.
