우창훈의 작업을 유심히 보자면 인체를 중심으로 하되, 모든 기운이 전 화면에 걸쳐 유동성을 보이고 있다. 모든 진동과 울림이 시각화되었다. 인간이란 우연하게 이 세계에 던져진 존재일진대, 우창훈은 여기에 실재론을 대입시킨다. 즉, 자신을 둘러싼 가족이란 존재, 혹은 이런저런 관계를 맺는 존재란 우연으로는 해석될 수 없는 존재들이다. 다시 말하면 그에게 있어서 모든 인적 관계는 순환적 고리로 연결되어 있다.
Looking closely at Woo’s pieces, they are centered on a human body and every energy shows liquidity over the whole screen. Every vibration and echo is visualized. Humans are accidentally thrown into this world but Wool substitutes realism for it. In other words, the being of the family around one, or the being of being related in this and that way is not a being which can be accidentally interested. In other words, for him, every human relationship is connected in a circular loop.

더욱이 남 다른 애정의 시선을 가지고 있으며, 그 속에 실재가 있다고 믿는다. 그에게는 인적관계란 필연적인 존재들이며, 그 바탕 위에 비로소 자신의 존재가 인정된다. 작가에게 주어진 이 현실은 이러한 만남에 의해 주선된 것이다. 그의 화면이 확장, 팽창, 수축을 거듭하는 것은 모든 존재란 상호 연결되어 있음을 반증한다. 그러기에 그의 작품은 사람 사는 공간이 중심이 된다. 혼자 혹은 여러 사람이 등장되기도 한다. 가족사도 드러낸다. 또 남녀사이에 숨길 수 없는 본능적 요소도 감추지 않는다. 생활 곳곳 디테일한 요소가 모두 소재가 된다.
Future, with an extraordinary loving sight, he believes that there would be a real being on which an existence of a self is recognized. For the artist, this reality is arranged by this encounter. What his screen repeats expansion, bulging and contraction is a witness to what every being or existence is interconnected. Thus, in his pieces, a space in which people lives is a center. In the pieces, one person or persons appear. He reveals his family history as well. Also, an instinct between man and woman is not hidden. All of every detailed factors in every corner of life are a material.

대단한 작업량에도 불구하고 작업 전반에 걸친 그의 주제는 산만하지 않다. 물질이라는 가시적인 세계에 볼모잡힌 현대인의 불안 심리가 중심에 자리 한다. 아울러 우리 현실이 팍팍함에도 불구하고 인간사에 대한 애정과 신뢰를 저버리지 않는다. 이것이 우창훈이 세상을 보는 방식일 게다.
Despite a huge number of works, a theme over the whole pieces is not discursive. A unstable psychology of modern people who are taken a hostage to a visible world of a material takes a center position. In addition, despite our reality is dry and tough, he does not betray love and trustfulness on human affairs. This would be a way how Woo looks at the world.

라이브, 116.7x91㎝

우창훈의 작품은 과학이 증명하는 물리적 현상을 예술작품으로 보여주는 드문 사례가 될 것이다. 특히 자연과학 이론을 예술로 끌어들인 경우로, 순수 평면 회화에 전문적인 이론을 적용하고 그 관계성을 규명해보고자 한 점은 분명 남다른 시도라 하겠다. 특히 시지각적인 공명, 소리의 전달, 해체, 조합, 분석 등의 다양한 언어는 우주와 인체공간에 대한 탐구영역의 광대함을 보여준다.
Woo’s works would be a rare case which physical phenomena which science witnesses are shown in an artistic way. Particularly, it is a case which a natural science theory is drawn into art. The thing that he applied a professional theory to a pure flat painting and tried to identify the relationship is obviously an extraordinary attempt. Diverse languages, in particular, involving visual-perceptional echo, delivery of voice, disassembly and assembly and analysis represents a measurelessness of his explorative domain for the universe and a human body space.

존재, 91x72.7㎝

그는 지난 30여 년간 오직 한 가지 주제에 몰입해왔다. 우리가 쉽게 상상하듯 소재주의에 함몰하거나 매너리즘에 빠지는 경우와는 다르다. 그의 소재, 주제는 이론적인 진화를 거듭해왔다. 우창훈에게 있어서 회화와 그의 캔버스는 하나의 우주였다. 세계에 대한 포괄적인 사고 그 자체였다.
He has been immersed in only one theme for about 30 years. It is different from what just like we easily imagine, you would be sunk into materialism or mannerism. His material and theme have steadily evolved in a theoretical aspect. For Woo, paintings and his canvas were one universe. They were a comprehensive thought itself for the world.

돌이켜보면 그의 작업은 최근 들어 거론되는 통섭적인 요소가 짙다. 미술과는 또 다른 영역인 분야에서 그 이론을 끌어들이고 이를 새로운 유형의 미술로 만들어내었다. 전문적인 영역에 대한 특별한 관심을 통해 미술이 줄 수 있는 사고와 상상력의 확장을 가져 왔다. 그는 우리로 하여금 그동안 눈이 있어도 보지 못했던 우주와 인간에 대해 눈뜨게 하고, 귀가 있어도 듣지 못했던 울림에 귀 기울이게 해 준다. 이 같은 역할을 수행하기 위해 그가 선택할 수 있었던 유일한 방법은 복합적인 차원의 사고방식이었다.
Looking back on, his works have an interdisciplinary factor frequently mentioned recently. He attempted to draw the theory from another field different from art and created a new type of art. He sought to enlarge thought and imagination which art is able to give through a special interest in a professional field. He makes us open our eyes to the universe and human beings which we have not seen even though we have an eye and listen to the echo of which we have not heard even though we have an ear till now. The only way which he could select to play such a role was a way of thinking in a complex dimension.

산사의 카오스, 162x130㎝

그의 작업은 저기 우리의 삶이 있으니 가서 보고 들어보자, 그리고 거기에 있는 에너지를 같이 느껴보자고 권유하고 있다. 적어도 작가인 나는 세상을 이렇게 보고 있는데, 당신은 어떻게 바라보는가라고 질문한다. 감상자 입장에서 작품을 통하여 인식과 세계의 확장이라는 가치를 얻을 수 있다면 작가로서는 더 큰 바람이 없을 것 같다. 우창훈의 작업은 그런 느낌과 여운을 준다.
His works recommend to us to go to see and listen because there is our life over there and feel the energy over there altogether. He ask a question that I as at least an artist see the world like this while how you look at the world. If you could get a value of the expansion of perception and the world via his works from a perspective of an appreciator, it would not be a larger desire for him as an artist. Woo’s works give such feeling and resonance.

서양화가 우창훈(Woo Chang Hoon) 작가

◇서양화가 우창훈(Woo Chang Hoon) 작가는 1954년 서울에서 출생하여 중앙대 서양화과 재학 중 78년도 중앙 미술대전에서 특선을 수상하고 졸업 후 구상전의 회원으로 약 10여년간 활동을 해왔다. 구상전 대상을 2회 수상하며 심사위원으로도 활동해왔으며 전업작가로서14회의 개인전을 통해 작품을 꾸준히 알려왔다. 최근에는 국내외의 아트페어에 활발하게 참여하며 작품들을 선보이고 있으며 2012년 올 하반기 쾰른(독일), 싱가포르, 마이애미(미국) 등 아트페어에 참가하여 더욱 활발한 활동을 보일 예정이다.
Woo Chang Hoon was born in 1954 Seoul, South Korea. Studied fine art at Chung Ang University, won special prize-The 1st Chung Ang Art Exhibition(1978). After graduation he became a member of Korean Association of Figurative Art for 10 years, Won the Gold Prize of Korean Association of Figurative Art for twice (1985, 1992). Woo is painting on over 35 years as a professional artist, had 14th Solo exhibition this year (2012), also participate Cologne, Singapore, Miami art fairs and group exhibition these days.
