  • Future Financial Innovation and Sustainable Growth In the 2020 letter to CEOs, Larry Fink, CEO of the world’s largest asset manager BlackRock, he forecasted that the climate change risk and ESG will be considered as key factors in investment decision-making. BlackRock is pursuing corporate sustainable development, by integrating ESG information analysis and evaluation into the investment process. ESG has emerged as the hottest topic in corporate management.

  • It became even more important to protect the environment and social safety net, after having experienced global COVID-19 crisis. Especially in recent years, ESG information disclosure, eco-friendly regulations including carbon reduction, stewardship codes etc. are becoming more and more intensified, and the Biden government of the US and the EU have announced to intensify ESG-related regulations in all process of the supply chain.
    Under ESG management, it is now the right time seek for successful strategies, to overcome internal and external risks, create new values, and move forward to sustainable growth. For these reasons, with the theme of ‘Future Financial Innovation and Sustainable Growth’, The Asia Business Daily has invited global economic experts to jointly explore the ways to build the present and future of ESG.

    • · Eun Sung-soo took office as the Chairman of the Financial Services Commission (FSC) on September 9, 2019. Prior to his appointment as FSC Chairman, Mr. Eun served as the Chairman & President of the Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) for two years from September 2017 to September 2019. He also led the Korea Investment Corporation (KIC), Korea’s sovereign wealth fund, from January 2016 to September 2017.
    • · Chairman Eun began his career in 1984 as a government official in the Ministry of Finance (MOF). His extensive expertise in economic and financial policy was built from his career path in public service for more than thirty years. He served in positions steering Korea’s financial policy, which earned him hands-on experience in regulatory improvement, financial industry development and corporate restructuring.
    • · His practical knowledge in financial affairs paved the way for him to be at the forefront of fighting against the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the eurozone crisis. From 2011 to 2012, he served as the Director General of International Finance Bureau at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF), where he played a key role in stabilizing Korea’s financial markets with macro-prudential measures and currency swap agreements. As Finance Deputy Minister of MOEF in 2013 and Executive Director of the World Bank in 2014, he remarkedly contributed to the promotion of regional and international cooperation.
    • · Chairman Eun received a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Seoul National University in 1984 and earned a Ph.D. in Economics from University of Hawaii in 1996.

    • Dr Ben Caldecott is the founding Director of the Oxford Sustainable Finance Programme at the University of Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. At the University of Oxford, he is the inaugural Lombard Odier Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow of Sustainable Finance, the first ever endowed professorship of sustainable finance, and a Supernumerary Fellow at Oriel College. Ben is also the founding Director and Principal Investigator of the UK Centre for Greening Finance & Investment (CGFI), established by UK Research and Innovation in 2021 as the national centre to accelerate the adoption and use of climate and environmental data and analytics by financial institutions internationally. Since 2019, he has also been seconded to the UK Cabinet Office as the COP26 Strategy Advisor for Finance.

    • Michael Sheren is a Senior Advisor within the Bank of England. In his role, he provides counsel and independent challenge to senior PRA Management on matters concerning, governance, banking supervision and policy as well as research relating to the financial markets. On behalf of the BoE and the UK government, Mr Sheren Co-Chaired the G20 Sustainable Finance Study Group with China. Correspondingly he is actively involved in domestic and international green finance activities including the Infrastructure Working Group within the G20 and the NGFS. Mr Sheren is also actively involved in the Banks fintech and digital finance work in the UK, Europe and Asia. Prior to Joining the Bank, Mr Sheren spent over twenty five years in the debt capital markets where he specialized in the structuring, distribution and trading debt for major global financial institutions in New York and London. Mr Sheren holds master’s degrees from Harvard, The London School of Economics and New York University where he studied finance, economics, philosophy and public policy. He also holds a BA from the George Washington University.

    • Piers Haben is a director at the European Banking Authority responsible for topics including ESG and digital finance, supervisory reporting and transparency, loan management, AML/CFT, consumers and equivalence. From 2011 to 2018 Piers was responsible for the EBA's risk infrastructure and stress testing framework. Prior to joining the EBA, Piers was a manager at the UK’s Financial Services Authority, with roles in prudential policy and supervision. Piers has held several positions of international relevance, in particular through membership of Basel Committee groups and in advisory roles for the South African Reserve Bank and the Central Bank of Eswatini.

    • · Hong, Jong Ho is a Professor of Economics and former Dean of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Seoul National University (SNU). His teaching and research are focused on environmental/energy economics and sustainable economy and policy. His involvement within the school extends to serving as the former Director of the Environmental Planning Institute and the Institute for Sustainable Development. Before his career at SNU, he held academic positions at Korea Development Institute (KDI) and Hanyang University, after receiving his Ph. D. at Cornell University. He also has broad experience working as a consultant for international organizations, such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, and has previously served as the President of the Korea Environmental Economics Association and Korean Association of Public Finance.
    • ·Currently, he serves as the President of the Asian Association of Environmental and Resource Economics, Chairman of the Energy Transition Forum of Korea, Co-Chairman of the Korean Federation for Environmental Movement, and policy advisor to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

    • Kwangwoo Park is Professor of Finance and Head of the Graduate School of Finance at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) in Seoul, Korea. He received his PhD in finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has bachelor’s degree in Business from Yonsei University in Seoul. Prior to joining KAIST, Dr. Park has taught at Chung-Ang University in Seoul. Dr. Park also taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia where he got a PhD in economics. His current areas of research interest include banking, corporate finance, and sustainability. He has been publishing a number of articles in top finance journals including the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies and major journals such as the Journal of Banking and Finance among others. Dr. Park served as the Editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Financial Studies which is the first journal listed in the Social Science Citation Index(SSCI) in the region. He is also a board member of the Journal of Financial Stability (SSCI). Dr. Park has been a research fellow and advisor for many leading institutions including the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the Bank of Korea (the central bank), and Korea Corporate Governance Service, and has been serving as a member of the advisory committees for the Korea Fair Trade Commission, Financial Service Commission, Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Office of the Prime Minister in Korea.

    Jiwoo Choi Deputy Director of Private Sector Facility, Green Climate Fund (GFC)

    • Jiwoo Choi is the Deputy Director a.i. of GCF’s Private Sector Facility supervising private sector climate finance for GCF. Jiwoo has about 20 years of experience in climate finance and a wide range of conventional finance including corporate, project and structured finance. She served as the Chief Risk Officer for Dubai Green Fund, a Dubai’s new sovereign fund dedicated for green investments. Prior to joining the Fund, Jiwoo served for 10+ years at Standard & Poor’s covering a whole suite of structured finance and project finance ratings, coupled with infrastructure and utility corporate ratings in the Asia Pacific Region. She worked as Head of Credit for Global Investment in Hanwha Life Insurance and served at the Financial Intelligence Unit in the Ministry of Finance and Economy in Korea. Jiwoo holds MBA from INSEAD (France) and Tsinghua University (China).

    Eugenia Koh Head of Sustainable Investing, Standard Chartered Bank

    • Eugenia Koh is Head of Sustainable Investing at Standard Chartered Bank. In her role, she is responsible for the development and implementation of the sustainable investing proposition for clients. This includes the ideation, curation and due diligence of sustainable solutions, and partnering with bankers and clients to incorporate sustainable investing strategies into client portfolios. She is also a member of the bank’s global Sustainable Finance Steering Committee. She has over 10 years of experience in sustainable development from sustainable investing to corporate social responsibility and experimenting with building a social enterprise to support livelihoods in Cambodia. She spent half of her career in banking and the other half in public relations consulting, working with both corporate and NGO clients. Prior to joining the Bank, she worked in the COO team at Barclays, where she had her initial foray into impact investing. There, she was tasked with evaluating and exploring the implementation of an impact investing platform for Barclays in Asia. She started her career at Weber Shandwick and worked on a number of award-winning public relations campaigns spanning thought leadership to corporate social responsibility. She is author of “Dawn Kwan. Art Awakening”, a chronicle of child prodigy Dawn Kwan’s journey as a child artist, which is available in all National Libraries in Singapore.
