Two Korean documentaries win silver in N.Y. TV-film award

Two Korean documentaries won silver at this year¡¯s New York TV & Film Awards, one of the world¡¯s biggest award ceremonies for television programs, films and videos.
According to the results unveiled on the festival¡¯s official website last night, MBC¡¯s environmental documentary ¡°Tears of Amazon Tristes Tropiques¡± and SBS family documentary ¡°Story of Seung-il - What It Means To Live,¡± were both awarded Silver World Medals.
¡°Tears of Amazon Tristes Tropiques¡± is the second to the series that warned of a possible environmental disaster by looking into the lives and the ecosystem within Amazon.
The documentary, a five-part series which first aired in December, 2009, scored an average viewership rating of over 20 percent and was re-made for the big screen the following March.
Kim Jin-man, the producer of ¡°Amazon¡± who is currently filming the fourth of the series on the environmental crisis in the North Pole, said through MBC¡¯s press release today that the news warmed him up despite where he is.
¡°Let me share this honor with my camera director Song In-hyuk who was with me back in Amazon and continued to follow me in this 300-day stay in North Pole, as well as with some 20,000 adorable penguins that have just returned to the North Pole,¡± he said.
The other winner, human documentary ¡°Story of Seung-il - What It Means To Live,¡± looked into the meaning of life through the life of former pro-league basketball coach Park Seung-il who has been enduring Lour Gehrig¡¯s disease for the past eight years.
Other local TV programs that submitted to the festival including ¡°The Slave Hunters¡± (Mini-Series) and ¡°Musical Documentary: Moonlit Night in Seoul¡± (DocuDrama) by KBS and ¡°Lion Queen¡± (Nature & Wildlife) by MBC received finalist certificates.
The New York TV & Film Awards, into its 54th edition, is one of the most well known and widely respected competitions in the world that recognizes the best in news, documentary, information and entertainment programming.
