Stulz Everett D. Reese Chair of Banking and Monetary Economics at the Ohio State University
  • René M. Stulz is the Everett D. Reese Chair of Banking and Monetary Economics and the Director of the Dice Center for Research in Financial Economics at The Ohio State University. He has also taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Chicago, and the University of Rochester. He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    He was awarded a Marvin Bower Fellowship from the Harvard Business School, a Doctorat Honoris Causa from the University of Neuchâtel, and the Risk Manager of the Year Award of the Global Association of Risk Professionals. In 2004, the magazine Treasury and Risk Management named him one of the 100 most influential people in finance. Reuters includes him in its list of the world's most influential scientific minds. He is a past president of the American Finance Association and of the Western Finance Association, and a fellow of the American Finance Association, the European Corporate Governance Institute, the Financial Management Association, and the Wharton Financial Institutions Center.

    René M. Stulz was the editor of the Journal of Finance, the leading academic publication in the field of finance, for twelve years. He is on the editorial board of more than ten academic and practitioner journals. Further, he is a member of the Asset Pricing and Corporate Finance Programs and the director of the Risk of Financial Institutions Group of the National Bureau of Economic Research.

    He has published more than one hundred papers in finance and economics journals, including the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Harvard Business Review. He is the author of a textbook titled Risk Management and Derivatives, a co-author of the Squam Lake Report: Fixing the Financial System, and has edited several books, including two volumes of the Handbook of the Economics of Finance.

    René M. Stulz has taught in executive development programs in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He has consulted for major financial institutions as well as for non-financial firms, law firms, the New York Stock Exchange, the IMF, and the World Bank, and testified in federal and state courts as well as in arbitrations. He is a director of Banque Bonhote and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Global Association of Risk Professionals. At GARP, he also chairs the FRM committee that oversees the FRM certification examination.

  • Sheridan Titman is a professor of finance at the University of Texas at Austin, where he holds the McAllister Centennial Chair in Financial Services at the McCombs School of Business. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Colorado and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University.

    Titman previously taught at UCLA where he was the chair for the department of finance. Between 1992 and 1994, he was one of the founding professors of the School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. From 1994 to 1997, he served as the John J. Collins, S.J. Chair in Finance at Boston College. In 1988–89, Titman worked in Washington D.C. as the special assistant to the Treasury Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy.

    Titman's academic publications include articles on asset pricing, corporate finance, and real estate. Sheridan won the Smith-Breeden Prize for the best finance research paper published in the Journal of Finance, the GSAM best paper award for the Review of Finance and was a recipient of the Batterymarch Fellowship. Titman served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Finance and the Review of Financial Studies.

    He co-authored three finance textbooks, 'Financial Markets and Corporate Strategy', 'Valuation: The Art and Science of Corporate Investment Decisions, and Financial Management: Principles and Applications'. In 2012 he succeeded Raghuram Rajan as the President of the American Finance Association and served as the President of the Western Finance Association. He has also served as Director of the Asia Pacific Finance Association and the Financial Management Association.

    He has worked as a senior research fellow/ head of telecommunication policy at Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) for six years and as the Executive Vice President at SK Broadband (former Hanaro Telecom) for four years in Seoul.

    He completed his doctorate degree specializing in international economics and development from Northwestern University.

  • Professor Karen Benson is a Professor of Finance, Director of Accreditation and Acting Deputy Head of School at UQ Business School, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

    Karen's research focuses on Funds Management with particular reference to factors that drive performance and fund flows. Other topics of interest include socially responsible investment funds, social impact bonds and the use of derivatives by corporations and fund managers. Her research has been well received by both practitioners and academics. Karen's work is published in internationally refereed journals including Journal of Banking and Finance, Pacific Basin Finance Journal, and Journal of Business Ethics.

    Karen's teaching focus is in Financial Management and International Finance. She is the Deputy Editor of Australian Journal of Management and President of Asian Finance Association.

    • Woo Chang Kim is associate professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Head of KAIST Center for Wealth Management Technologies. He serves on the editorial boards for several journals, including Quantitative Finance, Journal of Portfolio Management, Optimization and Engineering, and Quantitative Finance Letters. He is an expert on financial optimization and portfolio management, and has published many papers in leading academic and practitioner journals in the related fields as well as a textbook on robust portfolio management.

      He is a member of voting rights committee for Korea's National Pension System and an advisor for Samsung Asset Management. He was a visiting professor in Department of Economics and Finance at LUISS Guido Carli in Rome in 2014, a visiting fellow in Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University in 2013-2014, and a guest researcher for Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics at University of Bonn in 2013. He has earned doctoral degree from Princeton University's Operations Research and Financial Engineering Department, and master's and bachelor's from Industrial Engineering at Seoul National University.

    • Dr. Rhee received his BA from Seoul National University Law School, MBA from Rutgers University, and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. He is holding the K. J. Luke Distinguished Professor of International Banking and Finance. He served as the managing editor of the Pacific-Basin Finance Journal from 1993-2016, a premier academic journal focusing on Asia-Pacific capital markets and financial systems. He is currently holding an adjunct professorship at Monash University (Australia) since September 2011 and a distinguished visiting professorship at National Central University (Taiwan). He also serves as External Academic Advisor for City University of Hong Kong for a three-year period from October 2014 to September 2017.

      He served as the president of the Asian Finance Association for a two-year period, 2014-2016. He was the founding president of the Pacific-Basin Financial Management Society, an academic association created to promote academic research on the region's financial and capital markets. He also served as a board member of the U.S. Financial Management Association.

      He served as Program Chair of the Annual Pacific-Basin Finance Conferences, 1989-1997 and of the Asian Finance Association Annual Meetings, 2010-2012. He served as the chairman of the Asian Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee (ASFRC) in 2004-2007. The ASFRC is a part of the Global Shadow Financial Regulatory Committees which include the committees of United States, Europe, Japan, Latin America, Australia/New Zealand, and Asia. The ASFRC is charged to identify and analyze developing trends and ongoing events in Asia that may affect the efficiency and safe operation of financial markets and the financial services industry. ASFRC translates concepts drawn from academic research into concrete policy recommendations.

      He served as the dean (2008-2011) of the SKKU Business School in Seoul, Korea to initiate various reform programs to upgrade its research programs while he was on leave from University of Hawai'i. During his tenure, he successfully led the SKKU Business School to be accredited by the AACSB in 2009. He was Resident Scholar (1997-1999) of the Asian Development Bank. As Resident Scholar of the Bank, he spearheaded research programs on Asian financial crisis, mortgage-backed securities markets, and government bond markets. He was also involved with financial sector reform programs for Thailand, Indonesia, and Korea as part of the International Monetary Fund's support packages. He was a key member of the Bank team which created a regional economic monitoring program and this program eventually led to the creation of the Office of Economic Integration. He also served as a visiting research professor at the Hitotsubashi University (Japan), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, University of Malaya, Renmin University (China), and National University of Malaysia. He was the Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali Distinguished Chair in Investment and Finance of National University of Malaysia in 2005.

      His research has been published or forthcoming in numerous academic journals, including: Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of Financial Services Research, Journal of International Business Studies, Decision Sciences, Financial Management, etc. He has published over 90 academic papers and edited or authored 18 books on Asian financial markets.

      Dr. Rhee was a founding member and board member of the Ohana Pacific Bank, which is a state-chartered bank and serves ethnic minority business communities (Korean, Chinese, Philippine, Viet Nam, and Indonesian) in Hawaii. The Bank has been in business since June 2006. He consulted for a number of international institutions such as Asian Development Bank, Asian Development Bank Institute, International Chamber of Commerce, International Monetary Fund, Mexican Ministry of Finance and Public Credits, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, U.S. Agency for International Development, Bursa Malaysia (formerly Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange), Jakarta Stock Exchange, and MIR Asset Management Ltd. of Australia. He received the 2001 Archimedes Award from University of Catania (Sicily) and Erasmus University (Netherlands) for his contribution to academic research on Asian capital markets.

    • Professor Martin Young is Head of the School of Economics and Finance. He has a long association with Massey University and took up a position here as Associate Professor in early 2003. Prior to this Professor Young was at the Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He also held senior positions in the financial industry in New Zealand and was a member of the New Zealand Stock Exchange for many years.

      Professor Young has strong international interests, particularly in Asia. He is past Vice-President of Asian Finance Association and past Vice-President (International) of the Academy of Financial Services. He is currently Chair of the Asian Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee and member of FMA Survey and Synthesis Series Editorial Advisory Board. He also serves or has served on the editorial boards of a number of journals, including the Journal of Applied Finance and the International Review of Financial Analysis.

      Professor Young's main research interests are in the areas of market efficiency, financial regulation, funds management, optimization and bond and derivatives pricing. His publications in international refereed journals include the Journal of Banking and Finance, Economic Modelling, International Review of Finance, Pacific Basin Finance Journal, The Financial Review, Journal of Property Research, and the Journal of Real Estate Research.

    • Professor Kalok Chan is the Dean of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School and Wei Lun Professor of Finance. Prof. Chan joined CUHK Business School in 2014 November, from his previous role as Chair Professor of Finance and Acting Dean of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School. Prior to that, he was Head of HKUST's Finance Department from 2003 to 2013, the founding director of the HKUST-NYU Stern Joint Master in Global Finance program, and had established the Value Partners Centre for Investing. He was associate professor of finance at Arizona State University prior to joining the HKUST.

      Prof. Chan obtained his B.S.Sc in Economics from CUHK, and PhD in Finance from Ohio State University. As a leading scholar and a prominent researcher, Prof. Chan has had numerous publications in top ranked finance journals, and has been ranked as the top finance researcher in the Asia-Pacific region by the Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, most recently in 2011. His research interests focus on dynamics of asset prices, derivatives, market micro-structure, and international financial markets.

      Prof. Chan is active in contributing to the profession. He has been Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the HKIB Outstanding Financial Management Planner Awards since 2009. Prof. Chan was also the President of Asian Finance Association from 2008 to 2010, and currently serves as a member of Hang Seng Index Advisory Committee, Hong Kong Housing Authority, EFAC Financial Infrastructure Sub-Committee of Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and TraHK Supervisory Committee.

    • Professor Sun is the head of the department of finance at Fudan's management school. Professor Sun had taught at Nanyang Technological University and served as the dean of Institute for Financial and Accounting Studies at Xiamen University.

      Professor Sun's research interests are in the areas of Corporate Finance and International Finance. He has published many papers in reputable finance journals including JFE. Many of his research works are related to China such as privatization, B-share discount, overseas listing, dividend policy, etc. He has served as an ad hoc reviewer for many finance journals including RFS.

      Professor Sun is a board member of Asian Finance Association and a member on Asian Financial Regulatory Committee. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China and a Senior Visiting Financial Economist at the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

    • Tokuo Iwaisako is a professor at Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University. He also teaches finance and macroeconomics in the Department of Economics and at Hitotsubashi's Business School (Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy).

      He held the position of Principal Economist at the Institute of Policy Research, Ministry of Finance, Japan from April 2009 to March 2011. Professor Iwaisako earned his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1997. He received his B.A. from Hitotsubashi University in 1990.
